Finally it is thirsty Thursday and finally it is a national holidaywe can get behind. Well, actually, Travel Freak is a day early, but we don’t care because we can’t wait. July 19th is national Daiquiri day and we will be mixing up the rum based tropical drink to kick back all weekend.

The earliest history we could find on the Daiquiri starts in Santiago, Cuba with a man named Jennings Cox. A tall tale has it that Cox was a bartender in the early 1900’s. One day he ran out of gin in his bar, and like any savvy bartender, he improvised. Cox started flipping bottles and doing all kind of bartender twists (I am adding to this tall tale btw) and voile! He created the most delicious combination of white rum, sugar, and lime juice, that remains an iconic drink to this day. Unfortunately for Cox, Ernest Hemingway, who is known for being one of the biggest drunks of all time and nothing else (just kidding he wrote a lot of stuff) started drinking the Daiquiri. He and the crooked bartender Constantino Ribalaigua came along and took all the credit for the delicious drink. Apparently they are responsible for making the frozen variety. Like I said though this is all legend, and really I just feel bad for Cox if it is true.

Anyway, we know that none of this matters to you, you just want your Daiquiri! You just wait though, when you are 3 Daiquiris deep tonight or tomorrow, you will be waving your fist in the air and  rambling on about that bloody Hemingway stealing all of Cox’s fame! Oh that’s just me… Well then, here is a recipe for the best Daiquiri to make to celebrate Cox’s greatness!

*Remember, Daiquiris come in tons of flavors now, so get creative, unlike Hemingway that rat bastard.
