I remember the first time I approached the heavenly gates of burger heaven, best known as Zombie Burger. It doesn’t look like much on the outside when comparing it to the rest of downtown Des Moines, but it is truly one of a kind. It should be known that this burger joint is not for the faint of heart, it is for the ambitious burger connoisseurs out there. The titles of the burgers are all zombie themed, which may sound morbid to chow down on such gems such as the “Envy Corpse” or “T-Virus” but trust me when I tell you that these burgers are to die for.

The best approach to devouring one of these creations is to go with an empty stomach in order to allow maximum space for burger glory. However, the first time I went I was a little too ambitious and not only devoured my burger but half of another burger that contained mac n’ cheese in the buns along with french fries and a milkshake. It is safe to assume that I waddled around for the remainder of the afternoon. Sounds awesome, right!?

The outrageous concoctions such as the mac n’ cheese burger (The Walking Ched) and the grilled cheese burger (They’re Coming To Get You Barbara) are just the start of it. If you get a burger, you have to get a side of fries. A meal would not be complete without the french fries and the french fries at Zombie Burger are not complete without zombie sauce. The ingredients of such sauce remain a mystery. Just kidding, I can’t keep a secret for the life of me so I will share the life changing ingredients with you: ketchup, mayo, and sriracha sauce.

To wash down those burger and fries I insist that you order a milkshake. The milkshakes are just as unique as the burgers. The shakes are divided up into cake shakes, cereal shakes, and ones that cannot be categorized such as the Chocolate Nutella Marshmallow. My personal favorite would have to be the Zombie Bride Wedding Cake shake, which contains vanilla ice cream and yellow cake mix.

First and foremost were talking about a burger joint but if your heart is in a different place then they do have interesting appetizers, deep fried hot dogs, and soups and salads (if you’re into that sort of thing). For now if you would like to partake in burger glory you are going to have to travel to Des Moines, Iowa. All of us at Travel Freak will wait patiently for burger angels to bless us in New York.

What would you order at Zombie Burger?
