big gay ice cream storefront

You heard me correctly. Big. Gay. Ice Cream. The Big Gay Ice Cream shop is possibly the most magical ice cream shop in all of New York City. It started out as a Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, and soon evolved into a store in September 2001. This famous ice cream shop has two locations in New York, one on 125 East 7th Street, and the other one on 61 Grove Street. They even have a location in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. This isn’t your average ice cream joint. This place has daily specials, and runs out of the ice cream and toppings daily. The demand is high here, and when I wanted to try it all out for myself, I waited in a 25 minute long line outside of the store. It was worth every minute.

Walk into this tiny store and be greeted with colorful murals of unicorns smoking, and other majestic blow-up animals. As I waited for my Salty Pimp, the vanilla ice cream cone with streaks of dulce de leche sprinkled with sea salt, and then dipped into hard chocolate, my eyes scanned over the shelves of the store where I found Unicorn Meat, a plastic toy container of exactly what it said it was. I was handed my cone that, luckily for me being the slob that I am, had a saucer-like contraption underneath the top of the cone to prevent the ice cream from dripping all over your hands. What a fantastic invention. I didn’t make it one step out of the shop before biting into this delicious cone. The unusual combination of sea salt and chocolate, with a caramel flavor did the trick, 100%. The friend who I had gone there with who wouldn’t allow me to order anything other than the Salty Pimp for my first time, was right. That stuff is good. But I wouldn’t doubt that ordering anything else would leave any customer anything but satisfied. The other popular treats to choose from are the Bea Arthur, the Cococone, the Gobbler, the Mermaid, the Mexican Affo’gay’to, the Monday Sundae, the American Globs, and an assortment of shakes and floats. Check out the website to see how Big Gay Ice Cream got i’s name, and to learn about how they make each delicacy.

Have you tasted Big Gay Ice Cream?
