We live in Brooklyn, where “eating local” is all the rage in our hip, mustachioed neighborhood. It’s not uncommon to see people pickling their own veggies or starting chicken coops on their roof for fresh eggs (but never for the meat – MURDER!!) around these parts.

While we try to find local foods for a reasonable price on a regular basis, we’re more likely to stick to our delicious, cheap, cancer-causing packaged goods at home and splurge on the locally grown/slaughtered/prepared stuff when we are traveling. Luckily, our big backyard of the United States provides several opportunities to indulge this habit.

Below you’ll find a map of the best local foods by state in the U.S from LTPYL.com. Some of them are pretty obvious, like peaches in Georgia or lobsters in Maine. Others, however, are a little obscure. For instance, you probably didn’t know that a savory pastry called a pasty is a locally loved dinner staple in parts of Michigan. We can assure you, however, that this is true – we grew up there, we ate them often, and they’re damn good. No clue what the hell a North Carolina benne wafer is, though. And LOL, joke’s on Nevada.

Disclaimer: we recently received a pointed comment from a reader named Johanna O that some of our infographics have been poorly researched or misleading. And to that we say only this: sorry, but as we’ve stated in every post with an infographic, we didn’t make any of them. We find them, we think they look cool, we write some funny words about them, and then we show them to you. If you have an issue with the content of any of these graphics, try taking them up with the people who actually produced them. We always include the source, so it shouldn’t be too hard.

Thanks a bunch, and enjoy:

Steven tried out for The Amazing Race one time and was denied. We're not saying this is why he started this site, but it may have been a contributing factor in his decision to explore the world online and share his travel inspiration with others.
