Hello fellow freaks welcome to another addition of Foreign Film Friday, your one-stop-shop to international films that will make you sound more sophisticated around your friends! This week we have a very fun, family oriented movie from Argentina called Foosball (Metegol in Spanish). Don’t dismiss this animated film as all fun and games however, it broke the box office record in Argentina in July. Not only is Foosball the most expensive Argentinian movie of all time (costing $21 million when all is said and done), it’s also the most expensive Latin American film of all time!
We can get a better idea of the plot thanks to the official Foosball website:
Amadeo lives in a small town anonymously. He works in a bar, playing foosball better than anyone and is in love with Laura, though she does not know. His simple routine falls apart when Grosso, a young villager and the best soccer player in the world, becomes ready to avenge the only defeat he suffered in his life. With foosball, the bar and his soul destroyed, Amadeo discovers something magical: his beloved players talk, and much more! Together they embark on a journey full of adventures to save Laura and the town, and are on the way to becoming a real team. But is soccer the place for miracles?
Foosball was directed by Oscar winning Juan Jose Campanella and stars the voice of Pablo Rago, a prominent Argentinian actor. Also, the executive producer from Despicable Me, Sergio Pablos, oversaw the process as the animation director. The story was inspired by the story story Memorias de un wing derecho, Memoirs of a Right Wing in English by Roberto Fontanarrosa. Following the massive success in Argentina, Foosball was chosen to open the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain in September.
