As I mentioned yesterday, I’m currently in the midst of a juice fast. What can I say, there’s just something about punishing myself for three days to lose half a pound that really speaks to me as a fad dieter. It’s been going pretty well, but that’s only because I’m not doing much else besides the cleanse – if I had any big plans with friends today or tomorrow this fast would be broken quicker than the terms of Lindsay Lohan’s parole.

Needless to say, a successful juice cleanse would be extra impossible if I tried to do it during a vacation. Not only am I insatiably hungry for McDonald’s as soon as I step foot in an airport, there’s just no way I could visit a new destination without tasting it in some way, shape, or form. Sure, I could lick some local stones or chew-but-not-swallow a side salad and still stick with my crash diet, but that’s not the same (obviously). No, when I’m in a new city, I need to eat it all and come back for seconds.

So when this cleanse is over and I’m allowed to travel and consume solid food again, I’ll be sure to follow this guide from for the hungry traveler on an urban vacation. Living in New York and having been to Barcelona, Paris, and Rome, I already know that these places are foodie havens. Edinburgh, however, is something of a mystery to me – and this may just be the juice talking, but mutton stew sounds absolutely delicious.

I especially appreciate the inclusion of alcoholic beverages in the guide, as well as suggestions for weirder fare you can find in each of these cities. Although I have no idea where the hell one finds dried grasshopper tacos in New York. Fried cockroach fritters? Maybe. But not dried grasshoppers.
