I know I don’t know much about marriage or honeymoons, but I do know what would seem like a fun trip to take with a significant other. For those of you who are tired of any overly popular honeymoon locations, these are places that are worth looking into for that special after wedding trip. Not to knock any of the most popular destinations, but here Paris, Cancun and any Hawaiian island are completely out of the question.

1. El Camino de Santiago

The Way of St. James has many points of origin, but the destination is Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The fun part is not the destination, but the journey. You can stay in hostels or hotels with your significant other, or can find a way to camp. Most of this trip can be done by playing things by ear, so it’s the ideal destination for your adventuresome kindred souls. Figure out the best starting point and route for you both here.

2. Zagreb, Croatia

Before going straight to the beach, Zagreb is worth exploring. There’s countless museums to visit, pubs to drink at, and concerts to attend. Nearby is Mt. Medvednica, where you can go hiking and experience some breath taking views of the city. Amazing city + nearby beaches and mountains + things to do = perfect getaway for almost any couple.

3. Montreal, Canada

Montreal doesn’t scream romance, which is pretty ideal if you’re into a more low key honeymoon. There’s always something to do with a variety of bars, nighclubs, and museums, but the Montreal Botanical Garden is enough to think you both stepped into your own fairytale honeymoon.

4. New Orleans, Louisiana

I know that I’m primarily putting New Orleans on this list because I saw a couple dancing in the streets with a jazz band following behind them right after they got married, looking the happiest I have ever seen two people in love look, but it’s also because the French Quarter is bursting with life at all times of day. There’s a story behind every building, and there are plenty of walking tours available throughout the day. There’s also no last call, so feel free to drink away all that money you received as a gift on your wedding day (kidding). Everything seems to be shrouded in mysterious beauty, so taking a nighttime stroll might be all the romance you need.

5. Los Roques, Venezuela

This destination is pretty remote, so if you want to have a lot of privacy for your honeymoon, this is the perfect spot. It’s quiet, and every part of the island seems to have a sense of privacy and intimacy. The beaches are rarely overcrowded, and since it started as a fishing town it has some of the best seafood in the world.

6. Antarctica

This might be for more of the adventuresome spirits looking for an interesting honeymoon, but hey, nothing screams love like breathtaking views in a frozen tundra.

Where do you want to take your honeymoon?
